The Shaunavon Taekwondo Club will be hosting a special SparFest at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre this Saturday, April 26th.

The fun year-end celebration will see the young students taking part in three separate events, including sparring and board breaking sessions, as well as Poomsae (forms), which consists of the various fundamental stances, blocks, punches and kicks arranged in a set pattern.

Along with local club members, organizers have also invited students from other clubs to participate in the one-day event.

The sparring sessions should be particularly intriguing.

For one thing, the event will feature some special electronic scoring equipment.

Two internationally sanctioned referees will also be in attendance.

Area residents are encouraged to attend the unique event and see what the sport is all about.

The SparFest will also serve as an opportunity for the kids to demonstrate the skills they have learned throughout the year.

Admission is $3, with kids under 12 getting in for free.

Action is scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday (April 26) and continue into the afternoon.

Along with a full day of activities on Saturday, the young taekwondo students will also have an opportunity to attend a special clinic being led by Michelle Keith of Artisan Taekwondo of Regina.

The visit is part of a new initiative from Taekwondo Saskatchewan to help develop more elite athletes in the province.  It was one of the first camps being organized in Saskatchewan under the new program.

The camp will include instruction about the latest in taekwondo techniques and training regimes.

“The kids will get a chance to see a path they could take to compete at a higher level – or what it takes to get to the Olympics,” said Allen.

Allen will also be involved in another big taekwondo event in the coming weeks. He has been selected to referee at the Canadian national championships in Toronto May 15-18. He will also be attending the Chong Lee Cup in Montreal later that month.
