The Shaunavon Bantam Badgers won their opening round in the SHA Provincial “C” hockey draw.

The Badgers eliminated the Kyle/Beechy Bantams 11 goals to two goals in their two game-total goal series. The Badgers skated to a 5-1 triumph on Saturday afternoon at Jubilee Arena. The first period was scoreless with the home side ahead 2-0 after 40 minutes.
Kyler Sachkowski converted a feed in the slot area to draw first blood at 17:30 of the middle stanza. Brandt Miller banged home a power play marker for Shaunavon with only 26 seconds left in the second period.
Tyce Hattum beat Kyle/Beechy tender Mackenzie Dietrick on the short  side from about 30 feet out. Carter Nicolson scored on the power play after unloading a wicked slapshot at 16:32 of the final period. Mitchell Doiron closed out the scoring for the Badgers 27 seconds later.
Riley Malone led the assist parade with two followed by Darryl Rhodes, Brady Scott,  Adam Peterson, Kyler Sachkowski, Brandt Miller and goalie Spencer Davis with single helpers.
Austin Noble ruined Spencer Davis’ shutout bid by sliding the disc into the basket with only 30 seconds remaining. Evan Danroth and Dalton Schneider drew assists on the play for Kyle/Beechy.
Dietrick stood tall in the Kyle/Beechy net and his counterpart Davis was steady in the Badger cage. Darryl Rhodes was awarded a penalty shot at 4:42 of the third but was unsuccessful in his bid. Referee Tim Jones of Gull Lake assessed Kyle/Beechy with seven of the 13 minor penalties.
The Bantam Badgers opened the series with a 6-1 road win over Kyle/Beechy on Tuesday, January 26. The game was originally to be played on January 23rd, but was postponed after  a severe winter storm whipped through the Southwest.
The Badgers didn’t waste any effort making up for lost time.
Riley Malone scored just 15 seconds into the game to give the Badgers a quick lead. Kyler Sachkowski and Tyson Hunter picked up assists on the play.
The Badgers increased their advantage with goals from Kyle Goffinet and Kirk Amon in the final five minutes of the period. Derek Thomas and Darryl Rhodes picked up single assists on each goal.
Shaunavon led 3-0 after 20 minutes of play and kept their foot on the accelerator to open the second frame.
Carter Nicolson scored an unassisted goal at the 11 minute mark and Brandt Miller’s tally four minutes later gave the Badgers a 5-0 lead. Thomas picked up an assist on the Miller goal.
The Kyle/Beechy squad finally got on the scoreboard when Austin Noble found the back of the net in the final minute of the second period.
Clarke Gerard, however, restored the Badgers cushion with a quick goal in the third period. Riley Malone and Brandt Miller picked up assists on the power play strike.
Kyle Hansvall turned in a solid effort between the pipes for the Badgers to pick up the victory.
Kyle/Beechy was called for eight infractions during the game while Shaunavon was whistled for six penalties, all in the third period.

The team is coached by Paul Schoenroth, with Dwight Sachkowski serving as an assistant.
The Badgers will now advance to the second round and play the winner of the Eatonia/Eston/Leader versus Maple Creek Bantam Hawks series.
