Dancers Showcase talent
Posted on May 13, 2014 by Shaunavon Standard Members of the Shaunavon Dance Co. treated audiences to 90-minutes of high energy entertainment on Saturday during the group’s annual year-end recital.Held at the Shaunavon Public School gym with showings at 2 and 7 pm, the popular local event drew crowds totaling almost 700 people.
The recital marked the 23rd year the event has been staged by the Shaunavon Dance Co., which gained its start in 1992.
The show featured 21 numbers in a variety of themes and musical accompaniments as dancers showcased their talent and hard work through such styles as ballet, jazz, pointe and tap.
The show opened with the always entertaining tiny tots the youngest age group of Dance Co. students. The group of 15 three and four-year-olds sang Suzy Snowflake and exited the stage to thunderous applause.
After emcees Courtney Gardner and Shania Sonen – both former dance students – provided the crowd with an introductory message, the show took an upbeat turn as Grade 3 tap dancers took to the stage to perform “Dance With Me Tonight.”
The show ended with the musical theatre production – The Wizard of Oz – a colourful presentation that featured more than 20 students.
The school’s teachers/choreographers- Vivienne MacNeil and Dwinell Stevenson – made their way onto the stage to hand out awards at the conclusion of Saturday night’s show.
Year-end awards were handed to several dancers in the categories of Tap (Reagan Poppy, Auburn Thienes); Jazz (Kinae Wallis, Hannah MacNeil); Ballet (Serenity Folbar, Amanda Arendt, Ireland Girodat and graduating senior ballet students – Danika Armstrong, Allison Entem, Cayla Peskleway, Kelsey Romanchych, Renee Wilkins.
The students receiving awards were recognized for their hard work throughout the year.
Twenty-seven dancers also received excellent attendance awards while another 18 students received perfect attendance medals.
The Shaunavon Dance Co. also recognized its six graduating students this year – Danika Armstrong, Allison Entem, Rebecca Hansen, Cayla Peskleway, Kelsey Romanchych, and Renee Wilkins.
A number of local dancers attended the Moose Jaw Invitation Dance Carnival in April and The Pulse Dance Competition in March.
This season about 17 different students successfully passed one or more dance exams during the year.
