Frontier School, which has a long history of provincial badminton champions, can add one more team to its distinguished list.

Adam Keith and Kaleisha Heggestad won the gold medal at the SHSAA provincial badminton championship over the weekend in Warman, knocking off their opponents in a dominating manner along the way.

The local duo cruised through the championship event, finishing on top of Pool A with a 3-0 record after round robin action. They recorded 2-0 wins over Carrot River, Loon Lake and Wawota.

In the semi’s, they faced a team from Milestone and won 2-0 (21-13, 21-14).

Then, in the championship final, they defeated a team from Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney 2-0 (21-14, 21-14).

“It was really exciting to win gold,” sated Adam. “We’ve been partners  for  seven years.  It was great to end on a high note. Our success really reflects on the time and commitment our coaches have put forth to make us our best.”

The Heggestad/Keith duo proved to be an unstoppable force this year. Not only did they claim the provincial title, but they easily dusted off their opposition.

During a four week stretch, they swept through sectional, district, regional and provincial playoffs without dropping a single set and were never once in danger of losing a match.

At the district level, for instance, they cruised to victory, giving up just 4 and 5 points to their opponents in the championship showdown.

Even in the playoff round at the provincial championships the opponents could never muster more than 14 points in any given game.

In fact, their closest game through their entire playoff run came in the regional playdowns where they gave up 18 points to a Moose Jaw Central team, although Kaleisha and Adam still won that contest in straight sets.

They ended the season without losing a single match.

The only set they dropped all year came at a pre-season event in Swift Current where they lost one game (of 3 game match) to Rosetown. The Frontier squad, however, still went on to claim that match and they also won the tournament title at Swift Current.
