Champions crowned for Spring Basketball League

The Shaunavon Spring Basketball League wrapped up its season with an entertaining championship final on Monday night.

Team #5 ultimately prevailed in the deciding game with a 95-77 win over Team #4.

The winning squad included Karl Wilkins, Dean Wilkins, Renee Wilkins, Jordi Thomas, Derek Thomas, Kaelyn Oberle and Brock Larson.

Dean Wilkins led the offence for Team #5 with 30 points, while Karl Wilkins and Jordi Thomas chipped in with 19 points each.

Matt Benesh had a game high 42 points for Team #4 while Dillan Carlson scored 15.

Team #5 held an advantage throughout the game, but their opponents kept things close for much of the contest. There was only four points between the two sides in the second half before Team #5 pulled away with a late surge.

The teams qualified for the championship final after finishing first and second in the regular season standings.

Team #5 posted seven wins and one loss during double round-robin action while Team #4 had five wins and three losses.

Team #3 won the third place game with an 88-60 decision over Team #1 on Monday.

Jay Selvig and Justin Illerbrun led the scoring for Team #3 with 21 points each and Aaron Audette had 20 points.

Jesse Voll had a game high 24 points for Team #1 while Nixen Voll had 16 points.

Team #3 finished third in the regular season standings with four wins and four losses. Team #1 was fourth with three wins and five losses.

Team #2 failed to reach the playoffs after finishing the season with one win and seven losses.

This year’s league featured 40 players (on five teams). The league started in early May, with games played every Monday and Thursday night.

The season also wrapped up with a 3-point shooting contest.

Winning the three-point contest were Matt Benesh and Deanna East, who each scored 11 baskets in a one-minute time period.

Matt Benesh finished the season as the league’s top scorer, averaging 40.5 points a game.

Benesh had a 51 point game this season while second place scorer Aaron Audette had a 50 point game during a regular season contest.
