The Shaunavon Shadows knocked off the Lumsden Devils 33-28 on Friday afternoon during Conference 2 nine-man football play. The Shadows nail down second place in the league standings with one regular season contest remaining. Lumsden completed the regular season with a 5-1 record and will enjoy a first-place finish. The Shadows sit 4-1 but in the event of a tie the Devils get the nod on the basis pf points for and against in head-to-head play.

The Devils (first place), Shadows (second place) and Indian Head Broncs (third place) have qualified for the upcoming provincial football playoffs. The Shadows are in the 2 “A” bracket and will likely face Kindersley in provincial quarter-final action.

Running back Jordan Voll rushed for a total of four majors and was the workhorse. Voll’s four TD’s covered 42, 36, 11 and 10 yards. Shaunavon quarterback Dakota McFadyen scooted 19-yards to the house on a keeper play. Mac Oberle converted two touchdowns while Kyle Dordu chipped in the other convert. Another offensive highlight was Nixen Voll’s 80-yard pass-and-run play which set the Shadows up at the Devils’ six-yard line.

Josh Peterson, Colton Armstrong and Isaac Peterson led the Shadows’ defence physically. Mac Oberle executed an interception in the second quarter and returned it 30-yards. The blue and white also came up with a fumble recovery on the one-yard line to turn the ball over. Brock Larson and Isaac Peterson also broke up Lumsden third down gambles.

Shadows head coach Garret Glasrud commented, “Our offensive line was blocking hard and downfield which kept our momentum alive in the game.” Glasrud added, “The amount of effort that our guys came out with proves we can compete with the Lumsden Devils.” It was a high intensity back-and-forth battle between the top two seeds.

The Shadows close out the regular season on the road Friday, October 24 against the Maple Creek Redmen (2-3).
