The only thing in question during the final game for the Frontier Raiders at the annual Shaunavon Silhouettes senior girl’s basketball tournament, was whether or not the team would reach the 100 point plateau.
The Raiders had already clinched top spot at the tourney after picking up wins over Assiniboia (72-43) Friday night and the host Silhouettes (65-47) in a Saturday afternoon encounter. The Raiders went on to make it a clean sweep with a win over the Weyburn Eagles Saturday evening, although they didn’t reach the magical 100 point mark after taking their foot off the gas pedal early in the game. Still, Frontier scored an easy 96-31 victory over the Eagles, as every player on the 11- person roster hit the scoresheet during the game. The Raiders were led on offence by talented guard Melissa Peacock, who picked up 24 points while teammate Hope Anderson contributed 16 points. Tanner Jensen added 13 and Haley George had 11 for the Raiders. It was another well-rounded team effort earlier in the day in their win against Shaunavon as Megan Fyfe led the scoring parade for the Raiders with 12 points, while Melissa Peacock and Tanner Jensen had 11 and 10 points respectively. Post player Samantha Glenn had an outstanding game for the Raiders in their opening 72-43 win over Assiniboia Friday night at the SHS gymnasium. Glenn finished the game with a tournament-high 27 points, followed by Hope Anderson (13) and Tanner Jensen (8). It marked the second straight tournament win for the Raiders, who also captured top spot at an event in Rockglen the previous weekend. It’s been a good start for the campaign for Frontier, who are the favourite to capture the SWAC league title this season and contend for a medal at provincials in the 1A division. “We have two full lines and one extra sub, and we can pretty much run with anyone,” said coach Darryl Anderson following the team's win on Saturday. “Overall, this weekend, we shot the ball pretty well, although we had a few quarters where we shot poorly. For some reason we have trouble getting the ball in the basket to start a game, but we get better as the game goes on.” Assiniboia, meanwhile, went on to capture second place at the tournament after scoring a 57-43 win over the Silhouettes during a hard-fought game Saturday night. Assiniboia also beat Weyburn 97-21 earlier. Shaunavon finished third with a record of one win and two losses, scoring a decisive 88-14 victory over Weyburn for the triumph. Still, the team has already shown a great deal of improvement from the start of the season and were competitive against all three opponents this weekend, and even kept the score relatively close against the powerful Raiders team until late in the third quarter. The Silhouettes are in a bit of a rebuilding mold this season, losing a number of key players from the squad which captured the SWAC title last year. “I am pleased with the improvement and progress of all the girls on the team,” said coach Tim Miller. “There is great improvement in every area of the game that the girls are playing at the present time.” Rebecca Hansen led all Shaunavon scorers on the weekend with a total of 43 points, followed by Shania Sonen and Samantha Illerbrun with 19 points each. |
