The Shaunavon Bantam Badgers clipped the Eatonia Bantam Huskies 10-1 on Sunday afternoon to draw first blood in their Bantam “C” Provincial series.
The Badgers enjoy a nine goal edge heading to Leader on Saturday, February 4 for the second game of the two-game total goal series. There was a good crowd on hand at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre to witness the Badgers take period leads of 3-1 and 6-1. Kirk Humphrey and Mac Oberle provided the offensive spark with three goals apiece. Jordan Voll connected for two goals within about a four minute span in the opening period.
Captain Kain Stevenson and Rory Billard also deposited the biscuit behind Huskies goalkeeper Brendan Ritchie. Assistant captain Corey Bailey, Taron Ham and Kenton Hanson led in the assist department with three apiece. Kain Stevenson, Mac Oberle, Rory Billard and Kody James drew single helpers. Ironically, the Huskies opened the scoring at 2:35 of the first stanza before the Badgers pumped home 10 unanswered goals. Cody Huskins found the mesh for Eatonia on a set up from Kyle Harron. Darcy French backstopped the Badger win and was steady between the pipes. It was a cleanly played affair with referee Devin Pinkney of Swift Current only issuing three minors to Shaunavon. Meanwhile, in league play, the Bantam Badgers extended their unbeaten streak to 18 games with a pair of wins last week. The Badgers scored a 6-1 victory over the Swift Current Eliminators last Monday night. Kody James and Kain Stevenson each had a pair of goals for the Badgers, with singles from Mac Oberle and Taylor Cowie. Assists were supplied by Austin Tremere, Kain Stevenson, Rory Billard and Mac Oberle. The Badgers were handed eight minor penalties in the game, which was played in Swift Current, while the Eliminators received six minors. Darcy French picked up the win in net. Corey Bailey had a hat trick , to go along with two assists, to pace the Badgers to an 8-1 win over Maple Creek Hawks on Saturday. Mac Oberle had a pair of tallies while Kain Stevenson, Austin Tremere and Kirk Humphrey had single markers. Assists went to Kirk Humphrey, Brock Larson, Kain Stevenson and Mac Oberle. Referee Tim Jones assessed four penalties to the Badgers and three to the Hawks. Cole Cadieux was the winning goalkeeper for Shaunavon. The Badgers have just two games remaining in the regular season. On Sunday, the team hosts Maple Creek before travelling to Gull Lake for their final game on Wednesday, Feb. 8. |
