The Shaunavon Badgers (Whitemud Hockey League) rolled past the Midale Mustangs (Big Six Hockey League) 10-2 on Sunday night before 814 patrons at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre.
The Badgers take an eight goal lead in their SHA “B” second round two-game total-goal series. The second game is set for Saturday, February 25 in Midale. The Badgers led 2-1 after the opening period and broke it open in the second with five goals. The Mustangs failed to capitalize on their power play chances especially a two-man advantage at the five minute mark of the second frame. Captain J.J. Hunter sparked the home side with a four goal outing which brought the hats onto the ice. Luke Hunter netted a pair while Dusty Hunter notched an unassisted tally at 14:30 of the second stanza. Geoff Fisher dented twine on a backhand shot at 11:09 of the second period. Justin Menke converted on a nice passing play and Rej Stringer’s power play marker rounded out the scoring attack. Andy Schneider led the assist parade with five followed by Dusty Hunter, Todd Hornung and Rej Stringer with two apiece. Evan Schafer, Trevor Aadland, Justin Menke, J.J. Hunter and Blair Simpson collected singles. Brendon Vertefeuille blinked the red light and chipped in a helper for the Mustangs. Corey Koski scored at the 3:00 mark of the first to put Midale on the board. Kelly Gray and Jesse Nimegeers were credited with single helpers. The Badgers peppered Midale goalie Tanner Erickson with 64 shots. Russ Monette earned the win between the pipes for Shaunavon. Referee Lindsay Miyashiro of Swift Current assessed the Badgers with six of the nine minor penalties. The Badgers sidelined the Assiniboia Rebels of the Notekeu Hockey League in their first round series. |
