The Shaunavon Shadows are the best 2A Nine-Man football team in the province of Saskatchewan. The Shadows (Conference 2) posted a 42-28 triumph over the Delisle Rebels (Conference 4) before a large boisterous crowd at Shadows Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory nailed down the 2015 2A Nine-Man Provincial championship. The blue and white reeled off nine straight wins to conclude a magical season. The last time Shaunavon took home the provincial crown was back in 1982.
The Shadows experienced early game jitters and the Rebels bolted to a 14-0 first quarter lead. The score was deadlocked 21-21 at half-time and the Shadows didn’t take a lead until late in the third quarter when they moved ahead 34-28.
Star running back Jordan Voll scored a trio of touchdowns for the home side. Voll returned a kickoff for an 85-yard major at 6:23 of the third quarter. Voll hauled in a 12-yard TD pass from pivot Ryan Selvig on the last play of the third quarter. Voll scampered 44-yards to paydirt after receiving a swing pass from Selvig. Voll also connected for a total of four extra points.
Signal caller Ryan Selvig enjoyed a two touchdown game. Selvig called his own number on a 12-yard quarterback draw play up the middle early in the second quarter. Selvig dove into the end zone on a one-yard keeper play with 13 seconds left in the opening half. Brock Larson accounted for the other TD on a short one-yard run off right tackle and also chipped in a two point conversion on the final scoring play.
The Rebels struck early on the opening possession when Sam Michnik capped off the drive with a 15-yard run to the house. About six minutes later, Michnik scored again on a four-yard running play. Evan Morris punched across the goalline on a one-yard run off a third down gamble.
Quarterback James Shirley hit Jordan Valcamp on a nine-yard TD strike at 6:22 of the third quarter. Valcamp hoofed four converts for the visitors.
Shadows linebacker Josh Peterson had 11 tackles and an interception. Isaac Peterson collected 10 tackles and a pass knockdown. Defensive back Kyle Dordu turned in another strong outing by picking up 12 tackles. Cole Cadieux chipped in six tackles and a trio of pass knockdowns. Austin Tremere added seven tackles and a pass knockdown. Lane Richardson and Ryker Larson had four tackles apiece and Richardson combined with Brady Goulet for a quarterback sack.
Felipe Keeler sparked the Rebels with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Evan Morris and Sean Murray also enjoyed strong games for Delisle on the defensive side of the ball.
Shadows’ Head Coach Garret Glasrud said, “The provincial title feels great and it was the second one in school history.” Glasrud added, “We had to control our nerves in the early going but the big thing in the second half was our conditioning.”
The Shadows received gold medals and the Rebels silver medals during an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the game.
The Shadows earned a berth in the final by defeating Melville Cobras (provincial semi-final) and Tisdale Tornadoes (provincial quarter-final). It was an exciting championship game and marked Shaunavon’s first provincial final at Shadows Field since 1996.
