Midget Badgers dust off Strasbourg in opening round

The Shaunavon Midget Badgers steamrolled over the Strasbourg Midget Maroons 12-2 before a good crowd of onlookers on Thursday night at the Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre.

The Badgers captured the opener in Strasbourg 7-4 so take the SHA Midget Provincial “C” first round series 19 goals to six goals. The score was tied 2-2 after the first period but the turning point came early in the second period. The Badgers pumped home five goals within a span of less than five minutes to begin the middle stanza. Mac Oberle triggered four goals including a power play effort to pace the attack. Taylor Cowie fired a hat trick while Travis Kennedy and Taron Ham netted two goals apiece. Captain Adam Peterson notched the other Shaunavon tally. Travis Kennedy led the assist parade with four while Kyle Goffinet, Taylor Cowie and Corey Bailey had three helpers apiece. Brock Larson collected two helpers while Mac Oberle, Adam Peterson and Kenton Hanson picked up singles. Jayden Romich opened the scoring for the Maroons at 9:30 of the first frame. Keaton Kelln added another marker on the power play about nine minutes later. Austin Linnen, Tyler Walter and Donavon Thompson were credited with the assists. Darcy French earned the victory in the Badgers’ cage while Taggart McMillan absorbed the loss in the Maroons’ net. Referees Devin Pinkney and Brady Cairns of Swift Current assessed five minors and a double minor to the Badgers. The Maroons cooled their heels for six minors.
