Posted on March 11, 2014 by Shaunavon Standard

The Shaunavon Midget Badgers will face off against the Foam Lake Flyers in a winner-take-all showdown this Saturday with a trip to the provincial finals on the line.

The sudden death battle was created after the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie in the opening match of their two-game, total-point series. The game was played in Foam Lake on Saturday, March 8. Brett Zadorozniak opened the scoring for Foam Lake just two minutes into the first period. Drew Helgason picked up an assist on the play. Mac Oberle knotted the score at 1-1 with just over three minutes remaining in the first period, with assists going to Kyle Goffinet and Josh Peterson. Taylor Cowie put the Badgers in front with an unassisted marker in the second frame. Zadorozniak scored his second of the game, again on an assist by Helgason, in the third period to set up the dramatic rematch this weekend. The teams will meet this Saturday (March 15) at the CPWC for the deciding game. The winner of this series will meet the winner of the series between Naicam and Kerrobert for the SHA midget “C” title. It was Foam Lake who defeated Shaunavon in last year’s provincial playoffs. Each team was assessed three minor penalties. Meanwhile, in league play, the Midget Badgers whitewashed the Swift Current Midget Wild 4-0 on Thursday evening at the CPWC. The Badgers grab a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five South Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League semi-final round. The home side enjoyed period margins of 1-0 and 3-0. Taylor Cowie got a pair of goals and an assist to spark the local squad. Cowie went upstairs on his first goal and banged home the disc from a scramble in front for the second. Mac Oberle (power play) and Kyle Goffinet netted the other tallies. Mac Oberle and Kyle Goffinet picked up two assists apiece while Brock Larson, Kenton Hanson and Adam Peterson had the others. Darcy French was sharp in the Badgers’ cage and registered the goose-egg. Jackson Granrude was tagged with the loss in the Swift Current net. Referees Garnet Stevenson and Devin Floberg assessed three of the five minor infractions to the Wild.
