Cancer survivors encouraged to participate in 2014 Southwest Relay for Life

Posted on May 5, 2014 by Shaunavon Standard

Relay for Life has been described as more than an event – it’s an experience, a celebration of survival, as well as an opportunity to honour those who have lost their life to cancer.

This year’s event at Shaunavon, set to take place May 30-31, promises to have all of that and more.

Volunteers involved with the 2014 Southwest Relay for Life are looking to create a festival-like atmosphere to the local celebration, with plenty of events, entertainment and food throughout the night.

There will be several key activities connected with the event, including the traditional Victory Lap.

The Victory Lap features the participation of cancer survivors, who are surrounded by an emotional wave of support from friends and family as they complete the first lap. Survivors celebrate success in their battle with cancer and give hope to those still facing the disease.

Lois Thienes is the Survivor Chair.

To date, 45 survivors have signed up to participate in the relay this year.

Survivors can register online at http://www.relayforlife.ca/sk click on Shaunavon in the list of Relay locations,  then scroll down and click on Join Survivor Lap and fill in their information.

Or, survivors can call the toll free 1-855-725-0313., Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and a Cancer Society volunteer will register you over the phone for the Shaunavon Survivors Victory Lap.

Area residents can also contact Lois for more information by phoning 306-295-3880 or emailing her at thienes@sasktel.net.

For any Survivors with mobility issues, there will be golf carts and wheelchairs available for the Victory Lap.  A special supper is also being arranged on May 30 just before the start of the relay. The supper, which is free for Survivors, will start at 5 p.m., followed by a Survivor Group picture at 6:30pm.

The Survivor Victory Lap is set to begin at 7 p.m., followed by a Survivor & Caregiver/Family Lap.

“I would like to encourage all of our SouthWest Cancer Survivors to register and join us for a very emotional and uplifting evening,” said Thienes.

Another big moment will come later in the evening, during the Luminary ceremony.  The Luminaries are lit at twilight and provide light and inspiration to relay participants throughout the night. The moving ceremony is an opportunity for people to honour cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost to the disease.

Residents can buy a luminary from any of the team participants or by contacting Luminary Sales Chairperson: Brenda Waldron at: 306-297-2003 or at waldron.brenda80@gmail.com. Brenda will also be setting up a table for luminary sales at the following locations this month:

Friday, May 9 – Shaunavon Co-op Marketplace Foods 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 10 – Shaunavon Rexall 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Thursday, May 15 – Jae’s Pharmacy 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
