Nigh Game draws huge crowd

The Shaunavon Shadows blanked the Maple Creek Redmen 32-0 in Conference 2 nine-man football action during “Fauser Friday Night Lights” at Shadows Field. The win improved Shaunavon’s ledger to 2-0 and marked the first time the local squad had defeated Maple Creek since 2009.

The “Fauser Friday Night Lights” event began with a tailgate party which included barbecue burgers and music. The half-time show, sponsored by NALCO Champion, featured the “Buffalos of Groove” band.

There was an excellent crowd on hand and they came prepared with sleeping bags and blankets to keep warm. The game was historic because it was the first night game in Shadows’ history.

Shadows’ signal caller Dakota McFadyen paced the attack with a four touchdown effort. McFadyen opened the scoring on a one-yard quarterback keeper play at 9:39 of the first quarter. McFadyen scored again early in the second quarter on a short run and then added an eight-yard major when he rolled right into the end zone. McFadyen closed out the scoring by scampering in from five-yards out late in the game.

Jordan Voll cashed in a couple of two point conversions for the home side. The Redmen conceded a couple of safety touches to account for the other points.

Josh Peterson of the Shadows was solid with six tackles and a couple of quarterback sacks. In one instance, he dropped Maple Creek pivot Austin Agar for a 13-yard loss. Isaac Peterson and Brock Larson chipped in seven tackles apiece. Austin Tremere made a number of tackles and also had a fumble recovery. Kyle Dordu chipped in several tackles and an interception. The Shadows’ defence stuffed the Redmen on the five-yard line which resulted in a turnover on downs.

Linebacker Tyler Chabot collected nine tackles and a fumble recovery to spark the visitors on defence. Lineman Travis Rabe added a total of six tackles.

Shadows’ bench boss Garret Glasrud commented, “We came out fired up and the night game was a first time event for our players.” Glasrud said, “The defence stepped up and pursued the ball well.” He stated, “We applied good defensive pressure in the game.”

Meanwhile, team manager Rachelle Dordu, who helped organize the night game, said she was “ecstatic” with how things turned out.

Officials estimate that the crowd numbered well over 500 people and could have reached as high as 750 spectators.

Organizers say they would consider making the night game an annual event, but that no decision has been made yet.

The Shadows journey to Fort Qu’Appelle on Friday, September 26 to face the Marauders in their next contest.
