Shadows drop first place showdown with Devils

Posted on October 7, 2014 by Shaunavon Standard

The Lumsden Devils halted the Shaunavon Shadows’ winning streak in Conference 2 nine-man football action. The Devils topped Shaunavon 34-13 on a bone-chilling Thursday afternoon at Shadows Field. Lumsden improved to a league leading 4-0 while the Shadows’ slate is three wins and one loss. The Devils enjoyed quarter leads of 7-6, 14-6 and 21-13 in the contest.

The Devils got the ball rolling when Carter Froehlich intercepted a Shaunavon pass and returned it to the Shadows’ one-yard line. Running back Robert Ermel punched it across at 6:26 of the opening quarter. Ermel hooked up with Devils’ pivot Forrest Smith on a 50-yard pass-and-run scoring play at 11:33 of the second frame.

Devils’ running back Tyce Bennett rambled 30-yards to paydirt in the third quarter. Forrest Smith padded Lumsden’s lead on a one-yard quarterback keeper play with four minutes remaining in the game. Matt Whitteron hauled in a 33-yard TD pass late in the contest. Placekicker Carter Froehlich booted four converts to round out the scoring attack.

Brock Larson plunged across the goal line to open the Shadows’ scoring at 9:56 of the first quarter. Kyle Dordu raced to the end zone on an electrifying 70-yard kickoff return at the 4:58 mark of the third quarter. Jordan Voll hoofed a punt single to complete the Shadows’ scoring.

Josh Peterson was a tower of strength for the Shadows with 13 tackles and a fumble recovery. Kyle Dordu was solid with seven tackles while Isaac Peterson and Austin Tremere chipped in five tackles apiece. Carter Greenslade made a key fumble recovery and Blaze Larson had a pass knockdown.

Linebacker Taggart McMillan paced the Devils with 11 tackles with Blake Hurst adding a quarterback sack and pass knockdown.

Shadows’ bench boss Garret Glasrud said after the game, “We know that we can play with Lumsden.” Glasrud added, “Our big lapse was in effort and focus.”

The classic quote of the cold day belongs to local high school teacher and Shadows’ public address announcer Bob Smith. Smith joked at halftime, “I think that I will go home and set myself on fire.” It was the perfect description of the frosty, frigid conditions at Shadows Field.

The Shadows get another crack at the first place Devils on Friday, October 17 in Lumsden.
